Welcome to My World!

Friday, March 1, 2013

When I walked into school on my very first day as a 4th grade teacher last September (less than 24 hours after being hired... which I think schools do on purpose to first year teachers so they won't have time to freak out about not having a clue what to do!) I never imagined that my experiences would take me here.

Leading up to this day, I'd heard horror stories about having to be on page 156 in the basal reader at 11:49 am on Thursday, OR ELSE. So, believe me, I was ecstatic when my principal gave me free reign to decide how I was going to deliver instruction! My first few days were a complete blur and I set my sights on figuring out how I was going to run my literacy block.

I don't know why I thought I could just "figure out" how to run my literacy block! There were SO many options out there! All I knew was that I wanted to differentiate according to my students needs and that I felt very strongly about hands on, interactive learning. After many trials and errors, I found my niche. My classroom transformed into a center based, workshop style classroom. I thrived in this environment and, in turn, so did my students.

This year, I am a 3rd grade teacher. My passion for a center based, workshop style classroom has evolved greatly in the short year and a half since my first day and I am sure it will continue to evolve as I grow and learn as a teacher!

On The Center Based Classroom, I will be sharing stories, ideas, lots of FREEBIES, fabulous center based products, and the occasional giveaway!

  1. Congratulations on entering the blogging world...but be careful it is ADDICTIVE!!! :)

Your blog is so cute. I am also a center-based classroom...and I also used centers a lot when I taught 3rd grade. So I know how well they work!

  3. Hi Michaela! Last year was also my very first year teaching and I was also a grade 4 teacher! :) Unfortunately, it was only a long term contract, so I am back on the occasional teacher list this year. I loved my time in grade 3 and 4! I struggled with getting my literacy program going just the way I wanted it to, and I wish I had been able to implement centers like you did. It might have made things a bit easier for me! :P
